Community grab opportunity to clean up estate

Bernicia joined forces with local people and partner organisations for a community clean-up in advance of modernisations to homes in The Churches estate in Ashington.

Tenants helped by Bernicia’s Housing Services and Estates Services teams worked together with Northumberland County Council’s ‘Clean and Green Team’ and road sweepers to give the area a spring clean.

Bernicia begin work next month on a programme of kitchen improvements to dozens of homes on the estate.

Little helpers youngsters Taylor, aged four, and three-year-old Lottie-May helped their mothers and other tenants with the clean, as skips were filled to take away unwanted household items and rubbish.

Gemma Owens, Housing Services Manager at Bernicia said: “It’s wonderful to see so many of the community roll up their sleeves and take the opportunity to ensure homes and gardens are free of items they don’t need before the improvement works begin next month.

“This type of intervention and support brings staff and communities together, promoting pride in the area and creating a clean and safe environment for everyone to enjoy.’’
